El Sol Theater
We found a home! Virus Theater is fundraising and planning for the renovation and transformation of El Sol Theater into El Sol Performing Arts Center, a 200+ seat venue for theater, music, dance, and other performances, along with film screenings, conferences, festivals, and other presentations.
El Sol will also be a home to arts education programming, supporting our community's youth and adults in advancing skills in a variety of arts, including acting, play-writing, technical theater, dance, circus, music and more! Virus Theater will be the resident theater company at El Sol, and will be part of a performance schedule that includes other local theater companies, and local, regional and touring performers and presenters.
Construction continues in phases, subject to the amount of funds raised. We pause construction for time to rehearse, construct sets, and perform, and then we're back to plans and improvements.
Here is what we really would like to get done in the next year:
Heating and cooling system, sprinkler system, balcony access remodel, second bathroom remodel, addition of the bar, purchasing of minimal lighting equipment, sound equipment, and acoustical improvements. Approximate cost: $120,000.
Here is what we would like to complete over the next few years:
New theater seating, adding dressing rooms and a green room, purchasing a full set of theatrical lights, completing the Phase Two wiring necessary to run the lights, purchasing a projector and screen. Approximate cost: $160,000.
Through a hybrid business model, Virus Theater will partner with El Sol Theater, LLC, which will hire a theater manager and provide a full performance schedule for the times when El Sol is not in use by Virus Theater.
With over $90,000 since October 2015, we've completed:
- installation of the steel sound booth and catwalk
- design and fabrication of the new front gate for El Sol
- extension of the front stage & construction of the side stages
- electrical work, emergency exit, and ADA compliance
